Historic Gathering Launches Ambitious Revision of Morocco’s Family Code

Rabat – Key figures in the Moroccan legal and judicial landscape convened on Friday to launch the ambitious revision of the country’s Family Code. The meeting saw the participation of the Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi, the Deputy President of the Superior Council of the Judiciary, Mohammed Abdennabaoui, and the Prosecutor General of the King at the Court of Cassation, President of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, El Hassan Daki.

The revision of the Family Code has garnered significant attention due to its profound impact on Moroccan society. The meeting was held as part of the implementation of a letter King Mohammed VI recently addressed to the Head of Government, Aziz Akhnnouch.

In his letter, the King instructed Akhannouch to ensure the comprehensive revision of the family code in line with the vision of social inclusiveness he highlighted in his 2022 Throne Day speech.  In particular, the King’s vision of inclusiveness pays special attention to the advancement of women’s and family rights.

Addressing the press at the end of Frida’s meeting, Minister Ouahbi emphasized the significance of this initial gathering, describing it as marking the beginning of a journey that will shape the future of Moroccan families. He noted that the forthcoming weeks will see the launch of a major project initiated by the King to underscore the centrality of the family in Morocco’s national priorities.

“We will listen to civilian forces and government officials and we will try to listen to everyone to agree on a set of changes,” Ouahbi stated, expressing the government’s dedication to promoting the equitable status of Moroccan women.

Echoing these sentiments, Abdennabaoui stressed the King’s sensitivity to the concerns of Moroccan families. He outlined the committee’s plans to engage with various stakeholders, with a view to encouraging them to share their perspectives and suggestions on how to best implement the royal vision of social inclusion.

For his part,  Daki emphasized the  committee’s role in preserving the unity of Moroccan families, particularly the rights of women and children. He acknowledged that Morocco’s current Family Code, known as the Moudawana, has been in force for two decades, during which time shortcomings and challenges have become evident. The committee’s work will aim to address these shortcomings and present comprehensive proposals in line with the directives contained in the King’s letter to the Head of Government.
