Rabat – A tragic incident occurred at Cairo University after a female employee was shot and killed by a staff member within the university premises for refusing his marriage proposal.
The Egyptian Ministry of Interior released a statement revealing that the suspect was located in Matrouh province and, upon being targeted by security forces, turned the gun on himself and took his own life.
The motive behind this tragic shooting was attributed to the victim’s rejection of a romantic relationship with the suspect, a recurring pattern in Egypt,
The 32-year-old victim had prior knowledge of her killer, who had proposed to her long ago. She had declined his proposal, leading him to harass her on several occasions with the goal of forcing her to marry him.
The suspect had a history of threatening the victim, including burning her car five years prior, which resulted in his previous imprisonment, France24 reported.
This unfortunate event occurred just a day after another young woman was fatally shot in Egypt’s New Cairo district. The perpetrator, now in custody, had previously been engaged to the victim, but they had separated.
Over the past two years, Egypt has witnessed a concerning rise in similar crimes against women driven by rejection of marriage proposals.
Another horrific incident in Egypt that sent shockwaves through society was the brutal killing of 21-year-old university student Nayera Ashraf.
The horrifying event took place in June 2022 near Mansoura University when Mohammed Adel, also a student, violently attacked Nayera.
The suspect beat and stabbed her multiple times, before slitting her throat.
Mohammed Adel was executed in June 2023 in Gamasa Prison in the Dakahlia governorate following his conviction for the brutal murder.
