Rabat – Morocco’s security services at the Larache port in northern Morocco seized over 3 tonnes of cannabis resin known as “Chira” on Sunday morning.
The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said that police at the port thwarted the drug trafficking attempt in the early hours of Sunday.
Police found the drug concealed in the trailer of a fish transport truck, DGSN said, stressing that police arrested two suspects for their alleged involvement in the operation.
Police put the suspects in custody as part of an ongoing judicial investigation to uncover all circumstances of the case as well as any possible national and international ramifications of the criminal activity.
The operation is part of Morocco’s efforts to tackle drug trafficking.
In 2022, police seized over 98,000 tonnes of cannabis, representing a drop of 49% compared to a year earlier.
The same year marked the seizure of 190 kilograms of cocaine, representing a decline of 87% compared to the year before. In addition, police also seized 2.82 kilograms of heroin, representing a drop of 5% over 2021.
