Marrakech – Following the devastating earthquake that struck the Al-Haouz region on September 8, 2023, a massive mobilization effort is underway as Moroccan authorities coordinate rescue and relief operations in the affected areas.

The Royal Armed Forces, in collaboration with the Royal Gendarmerie, National Security, and Civil Protection, have mounted an extraordinary response to reach isolated communities and provide critical aid.

The 7 magnitude earthquake has caused widespread destruction, triggering rockslides and subsequent aftershocks that have further complicated rescue efforts. In the face of this catastrophe, Moroccan authorities have come together to ensure the safety and well-being of affected residents.

Royal Armed Forces at the Forefront of relief efforts

Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces have played a pivotal role in the ongoing rescue operations and the swift delivery of aid to areas ravaged by the earthquake.

Their substantial resources and capabilities have been employed to carry out rescue operations and provide aid by air, particularly in regions that have become inaccessible due to damaged roadways and treacherous terrain.

Since Saturday, Royal Armed Forces helicopters have been deployed to conduct vital air operations, including the evacuation of the injured. Operating from the Royal Air Force School base in Marrakech, these helicopters are performing between 35 and 40 missions daily, subject to weather conditions and the geographical challenges presented by the affected areas.

Various helicopter models, including Chinook CH47, Puma SA330, and AB 205, have been in constant operation since the early hours of the morning. They have been shuttling between Marrakech and the hardest-hit regions, especially those that cannot be reached via land routes due to the extensive damage caused by the earthquake.

A unified response

The response to the Al-Haouz earthquake has highlighted the unity and determination of Moroccan authorities and communities to support those affected. The Royal Gendarmerie, National Security, and Civil Protection have joined forces with the Royal Armed Forces to provide essential aid, medical assistance, and search-and-rescue operations.

In addition to the helicopter missions, teams on the ground are working tirelessly to assess the extent of the damage, locate survivors, and provide immediate relief to those in need. Mobile medical units and ambulances are on standby to ensure that medical attention is provided promptly.

The people of Al-Haouz and the affected regions are showing incredible resilience, coming together to help each other during these trying times. As rescue operations continue, the focus remains on saving lives, reconstruction and providing comfort to those who have lost their homes and loved ones.
