‘Recolonizing Africa’: France-Morocco Relations Strained Over Earthquake Disinformation

Stuttgart – Véronique Jacquier, a commentator on the French television channel CNews, made a startling statement during a discussion about former French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s African Marshal Plan—a topic of great controversial political weight in itself.

Jacquier’s audacious remark quickly gained momentum on social media, triggering widespread condemnation and sparking outrage.

Her statement, “recolonizing Africa” even took fellow commentator Pascal Praud by surprise, necessitating his immediate intervention during the live broadcast. This incident has ignited a heated online debate, attracting commentary from unexpected sources, including rapper Rohff.

In response to the incident, the rapper mocked Jacquier’s statement and humorously suggested she deserves recognition for her audacity. However, Rohff didn’t stop at humor, turning his attention to the broader issue of media responsibility.

He cautioned against labeling television channels as racist and urged the French media regulatory authority CSA to take a more proactive stance in monitoring and addressing such issues. Rohff’s critique extends beyond this singular incident, as he had previously linked media content to the rise in violence and drug trafficking following the tragic shooting incident in Nimes in August.

Amidst this backdrop of discord, the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco added another layer of complexity to the diplomatic relations between the two nations.

In a report about the disastrous earthquake that hit central Morocco this past Friday, the French channel TF1 raised the question of whether Morocco can recover without French aid.

Farida Amrani, a MP from the leftist party France Insoumise (France Unbowed), emphasized the importance of respecting Morocco’s decisions while advocating for coordination to prevent potential humanitarian bottlenecks. Her comments underscore the need for diplomacy and unity in times of adversity.

The controversy surrounding Jacquier’s statement has unexpectedly become a backdrop to these diplomatic tensions. While the earthquake response remains a symbol of international cooperation and unity in times of crisis, it also underscores the profound challenges that emerge when diplomatic relations intersect with humanitarian imperatives on the global stage.

In Morocco, Jacquier’s comments are bound to be perceived as an illustration of France’s political and medial class’ discomfort with Morocco’s assertiveness on the global stage, especially the kingdom’s apparent readiness to rid itself of the legacy of colonialism.
