Rabat – A recent report by the Higher Commission for Planning (HCP) revealed that three regions in Morocco have played a pivotal role in driving the country’s economic growth.
These regions, Casablanca-Settat, Rabat-Sale-Kenitra, and Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, collectively contributed nearly 60% of Morocco’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2021.
The Casablanca-Settat region was predictably the powerhouse, accounting for over 32% of the national GDP. This economic dominance is primarily due to its status as Morocco’s economic hub, with Casablanca being the country’s largest city and a major center for commerce, finance, and industry for all of Africa.
In second, the Rabat-Sale-Kenitra region contributed nearly 16% of the national GDP. The presence of the capital city, Rabat, and its administrative functions, along with the economic activities in this region, played a substantial role in this share.
The Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, located in the north of the country, made a contribution of 10.5% to Morocco’s GDP. Its strategic location, including the Tangier-Med port, has turned it into a key gateway for international trade, contributing significantly to its economy.
These three regions together have highlighted Morocco’s economic disparities, with a growing gap between them and the rest of the country.

The report revealed that the average absolute difference between the GDP of these leading regions and the regional GDP average increased from MAD 66.4 billion in 2020 to MAD 71.8 billion in 2021.
The Fes-Meknes region accounted for 8.2% of Morocco’s GDP, followed by Marrakech-Asfi with 7.9%, Souss-Massa with 6.2%, and Beni Mellal-Khenifra with nearly 6%.
Meanwhile, the Oriental region contributed to 5.3% of the national GDP, followed by Draa-Tafilalet (2.8%), and Morocco’s three southern regions (4.8%).
The report also shed light on the breakdown of economic activities, with the primary sector, which includes agriculture and fishing constituting 12% of the national GDP in 2021.
Meanwhile, industries such as manufacturing, mining, and construction collectively contributed nearly 26% to the national GDP.
The tertiary sector, comprising trade and non-trade services, played a dominant role, contributing nearly 52% to the GDP.
