Rabat – Police in Casablanca foiled a drug trafficking operation by sea early on Friday, seizing nearly two tonnes of Chira (cannabis resin) and arresting two individuals.
According to a press release from the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN), this police operation was carried out by the Casablanca Anti-Gang Brigade (BAG) in collaboration with the Sidi Bernoussi Judicial Police.
Early in the morning, investigators were able to seize 1,863 kilograms of cannabis resin in 51 bales, ready for shipment by sea.
Police also seized two boats, two engines, and several fuel drums.
Close to the scene, investigators managed to arrest two individuals, aged 28 and 51 respectively, who were placed under investigation by the competent public prosecutor’s office.
The DGSN pointed out that this operation is part of police efforts to combat international drug trafficking.
The amount seized is huge compared to the last time such an operation was thwarted.
On August 19, police officials intercepted 56 kilograms of Chira from a small vehicle at the Bab Sebta crossing in the northern town of Fnideq.
The drugs had been discovered as tablets hidden behind a hole built between the car’s fuel tank and the back seats, thanks to the cooperation of both customs authorities and police officers.
The suspect behind the criminal act was a Moroccan living abroad who was preparing to leave the country with his vehicle registered in Spain.
