Marrakech – In a candid and thought-provoking interview, French politician Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, leader of the political party “Debout la France,” discussed the dire situation in Morocco in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake and the current state of French foreign policy in the Maghreb region.

Dupont-Aignan expressed his deep concern for Moroccans affected by recent events and highlighted the need for a reevaluation of France’s approach to the region.

“The situation in Morocco is dire, and I am thinking of all Moroccans, of course, those who have lost their lives, but also their families, and those who must now rebuild everything,” Dupont-Aignan began, expressing his heartfelt sympathy for the people of Morocco.

However, he didn’t shy away from addressing France’s perceived absence during this crisis and its underlying causes.

Dupont-Aignan did not mince words when he pointed to what he believes is a problematic foreign policy pursued by President Emmanuel Macron.

He asserted that Macron’s approach in the Maghreb has strained relations with Morocco while seeking an illusion of collaboration with Algeria. According to Dupont-Aignan, this shift has resulted in France sacrificing the friendship of Morocco.

“The problem is the constant contempt that Emmanuel Macron has for the French,” Dupont-Aignan stated, drawing parallels between Macron’s domestic and foreign policies.

He emphasized Macron’s perceived elitism and disrespect for ordinary citizens, recalling. an incident where Macron made a derogatory comment about an African head of state, underscoring the negative implications of such behavior in international relations.

Dupont-Aignan also criticized the perceived subservience of French foreign policy to American interests, citing examples from previous administrations. According to him, France has lost its reputation for independence and non-alignment in global affairs, something exemplified by leaders like Jacques Chirac and Dominique de Villepin.

He called for a revival of an independent, non-aligned foreign policy for France. The politician stressed the importance of a foreign policy that listens to the voices of people worldwide, offers innovative solutions to combat underdevelopment, and demonstrates solidarity during international tragedies. He invoked the legacy of a France that was once loved and respected around the world.

As France continues to face diplomatic decline and embarrassment in a growing number of its former colonies, Nicolas Dupont-Aignan’s comments shed light on the complexities of French foreign policy, especially in the Maghreb region, and the need for a more thoughtful, respectful, and independent approach.
