Rabat – The Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rabat hosted a charity art auction on Saturday, with proceeds from the event going to those affected by the September 8 earthquake in Al Haouz.
Under the slogan “United for Morocco,” the charity auction was organized with the support of the National Museum Foundation and the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.
The event featured a group of artists and professionals in the art industry who volunteered following the earthquake that affected several regions in the country.
During this event, 119 works of art belonging to Moroccan and African artists were put on sale.
The artist list included Said Afifi, Amina Akznai, Mustafa Akrim, Yasmina Alawi, the late Leila Alawi, Mounia Amor, Dawood Oulad El Sayed, Mohammed Arjdal, the late Mohammed Qasemi, Abdelhak Sadouk, Walid Agdaoui, Mo Baala, Amina Ben Bouchta, and Ghani Belmaachi.
In a speech for the occasion, President of the National Museum Foundation Mehdi Qatbi praised the commitment of artists, exhibitors, and professionals who contributed to organizing the charity auction.
“Morocco serves as an example to the world because it succeeded in responding immediately to the needs of the affected individuals,” he said.
All the proceeds from the charity event will go to Fund 126, which was set up to finance relief efforts and the reconstruction of demolished areas.
As of October, the fund collected MAD 12 billion ($1.2 billion) in donations from state and private institutions, as well as from individual citizens.
The devastating earthquake left a trail of destruction, with casualties reaching nearly 3,000. Over 50,000 houses sustained partial or total damage in approximately 2,000 villages.
