Morocco’s Culture Ministry Launches Geoportal Mapping Tangible Heritage

Rabat – Morocco’s Culture Ministry has launched the first geoportal mapping sites of tangible heritage in the country.

The geoportal includes a Moroccan archaeological map, featuring more than 150 historical buildings and sites.

The website equally details information about the history of construction of the sites, their inclusion on the national heritage list, and their current condition, the Ministry said in a statement.

According to the statement, the portal aims to “facilitate access to the national heritage for Moroccan citizens, foreigners, researchers, and experts.”

The platform allows internet users to search for historical sites and monuments in Morocco, including those listed as world and natural heritage, based on their location in regions, provinces, and municipalities.

The portal is part of the country’s ongoing efforts to preserve and promote national cultural heritage and leverage it to boost tourism revenues.

In March 2023, Morocco’s Ministry of Tourism launched an ambitious 2023-2026 roadmap to develop the tourism sector.

With an allocated funding of MAD 6 Billion ($578,3 million), the roadmap aims to attract 17.5 million tourists, generate MAD 120 Billion ($11,5 billion) in receipts and create 200,000 new jobs by 2026.

Despite the devastating earthquake that hit Morocco on September 8, the country’s tourism industry is still on track for record earnings by the end of 2023.

In the first seven months of 2023, Morocco welcomed 8.6 million visitors, up 15% compared to the same period in 2019. Tourist revenues during this period reached $5.6 billion, up 38% compared to 2019.
