Rabat – Meta has issued an apology for the “terrorist” labeling of Palestinian users’ bios, saying that it was the result of an issue with Arabic translations in certain products.

Meta, also the parent company of Instagram, released a statement addressing the issue, expressing their regret and acknowledging the error.

“We sincerely apologize that this happened,” said the tech conglomerate, emphasizing its commitment to resolving the situation promptly. The incident came to light when some users who had posted in support of Palestine or Gaza residents noticed that Meta was suppressing their content.

The controversy sparked discussions surrounding censorship and bias on social media platforms, particularly in situations where political issues are involved. The recent accusation by many Instagram users of purposefully censoring posts in support of Palestine underscored the longstand concerns about unfair moderation as war rages in Gaza.

Israel has continued  its brutal war on Gaza with indiscriminate airstrikes that have destroyed schools, hospitals, and places of worship where a large number of displaced people in Gaza were taking shelter.

The latest figures show that more than 4,137 Palestinians have been killed and 13,000 wounded as a result of the Israeli attack.

The response of Major corporations, such as Instagram, has been silent on the devastating and indiscriminate bombing of Gaza by the Israeli Defence Forces. As Western governments have sided with Israel, major corporations have made sure to distance or censor those who take an unorthodox, pro-Palestinian liberation stance in the ongoing Hamas-Israel war..

In this context, Instagram’s controversial insertion of the word “terrorist” into pro-Palestine users’ bios has raised questions about how AI systems are programmed and the potential for biased outcomes.

It remains to be seen how Meta will address the fallout from this incident and whether the incident will result in any changes to their content moderation and translation processes.
