Rabat – King Mohammed VI has appointed Farid Chourak as the new Wali (Governor) of the Marrakech-Safi region, replacing Karim Kassi-Lahlou.
Chourak, who has also been appointed governor of the Marrakech prefecture, boasts a multifaceted experience ranging from academia to administrative positions.
Aged 69, Chourak’s journey into public service began in 1983 when he started his professional career as a professor and researcher at the Faculty of Legal, Economic, and Social Sciences in Oujda.
His background in economics and academia marked the initial stages of what would become a notable career in public administration.
In 2002, he was appointed as the Director of the Regional Investment Center for the Oriental Region. His tenure in this role was marked by a commitment to promoting investment and economic growth in the region.
In 2010, Chourak was nominated as the governor of Rehamna, a province in the region of Marrakech-Safi.
In 2017, he assumed the role of governor of the Al Hoceima province in the region of Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima.
Chourak holds a doctorate in economics from the University of Lumiere-Lyon in France.

His academic foundation has played a key role in shaping his approach to public administration.
In addition, his multifaceted experience, ranging from academia to key administrative positions, has equipped him with the knowledge and experience for the position of Wali of the Marrakech-Safi region.
Marrakech-Safi, located in central Morocco, is a significant and diverse region known for its historical, cultural, and economic importance.
The region is home to the cities of Marrakech and Essaouira, which are among Morocco’s top tourist destinations. The region’s tourism appeal significantly contributes to the local economy, providing employment and revenue.
In addition, the Marrakech-Safi region is agriculturally rich and diverse. It is known for the cultivation of various crops, including olives, citrus fruits, argan trees, and saffron.
The region has witnessed substantial economic development in recent years, including investment in infrastructure and industries.
