Several African countries have reiterated their support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan before the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Gabon is among the countries that renewed its support for the Moroccan initiative, stressing that the plan presents “credible and reassuring prospects, not only to end the current political impasse but also to reach an acceptable and negotiated political solution.”

Gabon’s UN Representative Lia Bouanga Ayoune conveyed her country’s support stressing that more than a 100 countries have expressed a similar sentiment for the autonomy initiative.

The Democratic Republic of Congo made similar remarks, renewing support for the Moroccan initiative.

DRC’s Permanent Representative to the UN Zenon Mukongo Ngay similarly highlighted the socio-economic development Morocco launched in favor of southern provinces and local population, as part of the new development model launched under King Mohammed VI’s instructions.

The diplomat also reiterated support for the UN-led political process aimed at achieving a realistic, pragmatic, sustainable, and compromise-based political solution to end the dispute.

Burundi’s representative also reiterated its support for the autonomy initiative through its first counselor at the Permanent Mission of Burundi, Landry Sibomana.

Sibomana stressed that he too welcomed the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco to resolve the dispute, as well as the country’s efforts as part of the UN-led political process.

In a message to Algeria, he called on all parties to the dispute to engage in the political process to facilitate the resumption of the roundtable process, following the same format and with the same participants in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2654.

The diplomat referenced all parties, including Algeria, which has been shirking and rejecting its responsibility in the dispute over Western Sahara.

Guinea also expressed support for Moroco’s autonomy plan, recalling that the plan is endorsed by over a hundred UN member states.

The country also reiterated support for the UN-led political process as well as efforts of UN Envoy Staffan de Mistura.
