Rabat – President Joe Biden is set to travel to Israel for a visit that seeks to address the escalating Israel-Hamas conflict, amid ongoing aggression targeting Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
He will also travel to Jordan to meet King Abdullah II, Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sissi and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas.
The visit, announced by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, comes as humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip worsens, and as Israel considers the possibility of a ground attack to target Hamas militants.
Secretary Blinken emphasized the urgency of Biden’s visit, saying, “He is coming here at a critical moment for Israel, for the region, and for the world.”
The main agenda of President Biden’s visit will include discussions on Israel’s war objectives and strategy, focusing on minimizing the civilian casualties and facilitating humanitarian assistance to reach Gaza residents without benefiting Hamas.
John Kirby, White House National Security Council spokesperson, emphasized the need for continuous humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza, stating, “That has been a consistent call by President Biden and certainly by this entire administration.”
The Gaza Strip, which has been sealed off by Israel after recent clashes with Hamas, is experiencing an acute humanitarian crisis. Truckloads of aid have been halted at Egypt’s border, leaving Gaza’s 2.3 million residents in dire need of water, food, and fuel for generators.
President Biden’s upcoming talks with leaders in Jordan will largely centre on addressing the humanitarian concerns affecting Gaza’s population.
To date, Gaza authorities report over 2,800 casualties, including approximately a quarter of them being children, along with over 10,000 wounded due to Israeli airstrikes.
