Rabat – The Al-Amin Muhammad Mosque, a prominent religious site located in Gaza’s Khan Younis city, has been reportedly destroyed in an Israeli airstrike.
Local sources have confirmed that Israeli warplanes carried out the attack, targeting the Al-Amin Muhammad Mosque. The precise details of the attack, including casualties and extent of damage, are yet to be ascertained as the situation remains tense.
The retaliatory strike comes one day after the Hamas-initiated Operation Al-Aqsa Flood in response to the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem and the rising incidents of settler violence in the occupied territories.
Hamas claimed responsibility for launching rockets into Israeli territory and capturing several Israelis.
The Israeli army launched Operation Swords of Iron in response, saying that it targets Hamas operatives and infrastructure within the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli bombardment of Gaza has continued into the early hours of Sunday, Al Jazeera reports.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement, declaring: “We are at war,” and urged civilians in Gaza to evacuate the area.
He further stated that the Israeli military is determined to dismantle “all Hamas hiding places” and reduce them to rubble.
Since the onset of the attack, over 300 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli air attacks according to Palestinian health ministry sources.
Meanwhile, at least 250 Israelis have been killed. According to Hamas’ military wing, they have captured several dozens of Israelis, Al Jazeera reports.
