Rabat – Morocco’s Royal Navy intercepted on Wednesday over 200 irregular migrants aboard two boats, nearly 200 kilometers southwest of the city of Dakhla.
Among the 234 Senegalese migrants aboard the boats, three women and two minors were also found, in addition to a dead body, according to a military source.
The boats in question had set sail on September 25 and 27 respectively from the coasts of Dakar and Diogo in Senegal, heading to the Canary Islands, the source added.
The people rescued received necessary medical care before being handed over to the Royal Gendarmerie for the usual administrative procedures, the same source said.
The discovered body was handed over to the Civil Protection to be transferred to the Hassan II Hospital Morgue in Dakhla.
In August, The Royal Navy and coastal surveillance teams saved 190 migrants, including 11 women, who were attempting to go from the country’s southern beaches to the Canary Islands.
The boats were seized by authorities in the country’s southern territorial seas, between the cities of Tan-Tan and Dakhla.
Morocco is a popular destination for migrants who wish to reach Europe in search of a better life, either through the Mediterranean or the Canary Islands.
