Rabat – Qatar renewed support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan on Monday before the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly on Monday.
Jassim Abdulaziz Al ThaniJassim Al Thani, Qatar’s representative at the UN, conveyed his country’s position and renewed its support for the UN-led political process aimed at achieving a sustainable and mutually acceptable political solution to the Western Sahara dispute.
The Qatari representative reiterated his country’s position on the Sahara dispute, stressing the need to settle the dispute peacefully through dialogue and negotiations.
Al Thani also expressed support for the UN Secretary General’s efforts to reach a lasting political solution in line with the UN-led political process.
He recalled Resolution 2654, which the UN Security Council adopted last year, stressing that this resolution “guarantees Morocco’s sovereignty over the territory.”
Qatar also hailed the efforts of Staffan de Mistura since his appointment to lead the UN-led political process for Western Sahara, expressing hope for a definitive and lasting solution to the decades-old dispute.
Qatar and Morocco share good diplomatic ties based on cooperation at different levels, including trade, security, and political dialogue.
In addition to Qatar, several other countries renewed their support for Morocco’s position at the UN 4th Committee, including El Salvador and Cote d’Ivoire.
The two countries commended the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a serious and credible basis to end the dispute over Western Sahara.
According to Cote d’Ivoire representative to the UN Tiemoko Moriko, the S Moroccan autonomy plan presented by Morocco is “in line with the United Nations Charter and international law,” adding that this initiative deserves to be welcomed and commended by the international community.”
