Rabat – In a significant development, military leaders who orchestrated a coup in Niger have formally accepted Algeria’s mediation efforts, with the Algerian foreign ministry revealing on Monday that it had proposed a “six-month transition plan” to steer Niger away from its current political turmoil.

Niger has been under the control of a military regime for over two months, following the ousting of the democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum. The situation has sparked international concern, and Algeria has taken the lead in facilitating a resolution.

In a statement released today, the Algerian foreign ministry confirmed that “the Algerian government has received via the Nigerien ministry of foreign affairs a (statement of) acceptance of Algerian mediation aimed at promoting a political solution to the crisis in Niger.”

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has entrusted Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf with the task of “visiting Niamey as soon as possible with the aim of launching discussions with all stakeholders,” the statement added.

Algeria, which shares its southern border with Niger, first proposed the six-month transition plan at the end of August. Speaking at the time, Minister Attaf argued that the plan’s main aim was  to “formulate political arrangements with the acceptance of all parties in Niger without excluding any party.”

In its latest statement, Algiers emphasized that “the acceptance of the Algerian initiative strengthens the prospect of a political solution to this crisis.” Furthermore, it expressed optimism that this mediation would “pave the way” for a “peaceful” resolution, asserting that such an outcome would be in the “interest of the entire region.”

The security situation in Niger is bound to have a significant impact on neighboring Algeria, President Tebboune argued on August 6, underlining the need for the international community to adopt a diplomatic approach to the Nigerien crisis and announcing that Algeria would firmly oppose any foreign military intervention in Niger.
