Rabat – Senegal, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE have all reiterated support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, emphasizing the importance of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the most serious and credible route to resolving the decades-long dispute over Western Sahara.

The three countries voiced their positions at the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly on Monday.

Hassan Ben Mohammed Al Amri, Saudi Arabia’s representative at the UN, reiterated his country’s “support for the autonomy initiative in the Moroccan Sahara within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” describing it “as a solution in line with international law and the resolutions of the UN Security Council and the General Assembly.”

He also stated his country would reject anything that harms Morocco’s interests or its territorial integrity.

The UAE echoed Saudi Arabia’s support during the same event, reaffirming the  Emirates’ consistent support of Morocco’s just cause.

Abu Dhabi supports all the measures Morocco has taken in recent years to defend its legitimate rights, said the Emirati representative, adding that the autonomy plan is an important, serious, and credible basis to end the decades-spanning Sahara dispute.

Senegal’s representative to the UN, Diamane Diome, made similar remarks on Monday, emphasizing that the autonomy plan was in line with international law, the UN Charter, and all relevant Security Council resolutions.

He said that the initiative promises a better future for the entire Sahel Saharan region, commending Morocco’s development efforts to boost southern provinces development.

He also recalled the broad support of the international community for Morocco’s position, stressing that at least 100 countries support the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the best way to resolve the Sahara dispute.

Proof of this support is the decision by 30 countries, including Senegal, to open consular offices in the cities of Laayoune and Dakhla with the aim of contributing to the sustainable development of the region.

Morocco also received renewed support from a group of countries during the 4th committee, including Togo, Qatar, and Cote d’Ivoire, which have all commended Morocco’s contributions to the UN’s efforts to find a lasting and compromise-based solution to the decades-long dispute.
