Rabat – The Muslim community continues to grapple with the rise of Islamophobia in Germany.
The situation has become concerning not only for the Muslim community but also for experts, who have been warning about the consequences of the rise in Islamophobic sentiments in the European country.
One of the latest testimonies came from Mathias Rohe, who co-authored the “most comprehensive” reports highlighting the surge of Islamophobia in Germany, according to Anadolu Agency.
Speaking to the outlet, Rohe emphasized that Muslims in the European country “encounter Islamophobic discrimination in their everyday life, for example in the education, in the labor market, while looking for accommodation, in the media, and much more.”
The expert described the situation as an “urgent problem.”
“We must not leave the Muslims alone with this. This is a problem for all of us,” Rohe added.
The expert emphasized that non-Muslims in Germany continue to believe in typical stereotypes about Muslims, including those claiming that Muslims cannot “bring any positive change” or that “their values are completely different.”
“On the contrary, we have so much in common, and every person in this country has the right to live freely in their religion, and to pursue their own values as long as it fits within the framework of our legal system. And the vast majority of Muslims support this, and they don’t deserve such discriminatory attitudes,” he added.
In August, converging reports quoted data from the German government saying that the country’s police recorded 258 Islamophobic crimes during the first half of 2023.
According to the data, over a dozen mosques witnessed Islamophobic acts between January and June of this year.
Dozens of Muslims have also experienced physical attacks or verbal harassment in the street or other public places across Germany, and 17 people have been said to have sustained injuries in such anti-Islam acts.
As Islamophobic incidents rose in light of the war in Gaza, several German politicians and institutions have also put pressure on public figures for their support for Palestine.
Several football clubs for example, including Bayern Munich, have pressured their Muslim footballers like Noussair Mazraoui for their vocal support for Palestine.
