Rabat – Joe Biden’s support for Israel’s “self-defense” claims amid the occupation forces’ genocidal war against Gaza is expected to cost the US President the support of the Muslim community in the upcoming presidential elections.
The head of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Nihad Awad told Anadolu in a recent interview that Biden has “ignored our people” amid the ongoing genocide and that “we’re going to ignore him” in the upcoming election..
“We told him directly, in our personal capacities, that if you do not call for an immediate ceasefire, you will not get our votes in 2024,” Awad said, emphasizing that there is “no possibility” for the community to give Biden any support following his stance.
Awad’s remarks came following Biden ruling out any support for a ceasefire in Gaza as civilians and their shelter sites continue to be targets to the occupying forces.
“The Biden administration, in our view, has been betraying American Muslim voters and the pro-Palestine movement, who were promised that he would center human rights in his policies, both domestic and foreign,” he said.
According to a Pew Research Center study, an estimated 3.45 million Muslims of all ages were living in the US in 2017. The number accounts for about 1.1% of the total population.
Biden’s policies have been perceived as “too-pro Israel” by many in the US, according to a new report from think tank Brookings Institution.
The report cited a poll showing that more Americans are viewing the US president as “too pro-Israeli” compared to October, a view that was especially prominent among young Democrats.
The poll also emphasized that Israel has lost much of the early support it gained following Hamas’ attack on October 7.
As Israeli occupation forces continue targeting civilians and vital infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, criticism has been mounting against Israel and the US, as well as the international community for the failure to establish an immediate ceasefire.
Pro-Palestinian protests have swept the world, including in the US and the UK, with the latter witnessing a protest of over one million demonstrators condemning the Israeli genocide.
