Rabat – Morocco’s flag carrier Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has joined forces with Boeing, solidifying their longstanding partnership by confirming the acquisition of two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners as part of the North African carrier’s ambitious fleet modernization plan.
RAM has recently expanded its fleet of wide-body aircraft, including the Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 models, as it actively pursues growth opportunities in the evolving aviation landscape.
The two additional 787-9 Dreamliners, announced jointly by Boeing and Royal Air Maroc, will play a pivotal role in the airline’s short-term plan to extend its long-haul network, seizing market conditions that appear highly favorable in 2023.
Royal Air Maroc CEO Abdelhamid Addou expressed enthusiasm about the new acquisitions, stating: “These two new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners will enable Royal Air Maroc to expand its long-haul network in the short term to meet the very favorable market conditions in 2023.”
“Concurrently, the airline is actively conducting a large-scale tender to quadruple its aircraft fleet by 2037,” he added.
Over the past nine years, Royal Air Maroc has strategically grown its fleet of wide-body aircraft, leveraging the efficiency and flexibility of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner family to extend its long-haul reach.
The recent order, previously undisclosed on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website, underscores the synergy between the two companies that spans more than five decades.
Brad McMullen, Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing at Boeing, affirmed the compatibility of the Dreamliner with Royal Air Maroc’s growth and modernization plans.
“The 787 Dreamliner aligns perfectly with Royal Air Maroc’s growth and modernization plans. The relationships established by Boeing and the airline span over five decades, and we anticipate new opportunities to strengthen our partnership with Royal Air Maroc,” he explained.
The purchases come as the airline signed a contract with the Moroccan government last July to increase the number of its aircraft from 50 to 200 over the next 15 years. This agreement is part of the 2023-2032 program to position Morocco among the world’s leading tourist destinations.
As a Oneworld alliance member, Royal Air Maroc currently serves 82 destinations across 41 territories worldwide, including frequent flights to major capitals in Europe, North America, and the Middle East. In addition to the Dreamliner series, the airline’s Boeing fleet includes the 737.
