Rabat – Morocco’s capital Rabat will host a regional workshop focused on enhancing the Knowledge Hub related to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
The event is organized by the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). It will run on November 22 and 23 at the headquarters of the CNDH.
The event aims to accelerate the implementation of CEDAW by empowering religious, educational, and media stakeholders in the region, according to the organizers.
CEDAW is an international treaty that the UN adopted in 1979 with the aim of promoting and protecting women’s rights.
The workshop will explore various aspects, including initiatives that national human rights institutions can adopt, innovative projects within this context, and mechanisms for parliamentary engagement in the Knowledge Hub.
The event will also address the intersection of faith and women’s rights while striving to eliminate reservations on CEDAW.
Sessions will cover topics such as “CEDAW and International Human Rights Law,” “Religion and Women’s Rights,” and “The Faith and Human Rights Framework: Interconnections with CEDAW and its Impact on Women’s Rights in the Arab Region.”
The opening session will feature CNDH President Amina Bouayach and the Director of Contractual Mechanisms at the UN Human Rights Council Ibrahim Salama.
The event will bring together representatives from national human rights institutions, academics, and media professionals from the MENA region, as well as religious leaders.
The workshop will aim to serve as a platform for collaboration between the region’s religious and civic leaders in areas related to the protection of women’s rights.
