Rabat – Head coach of the Moroccan National football team Walid Regragui has reportedly sent CAF the initial list of players selected to participate in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire in January.
Coaches of the teams qualifying for the 2023 AFCON had until December 14 to submit a preliminary roster to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which requires a maximum number of 55 players.
However, the final list of 27 players must be sent to CAF by January 3, provided that these players were included in the initial list.
In line with a FIFA circular regarding the players’ participation in the tournament, the federations of the qualified countries have until December 17 to send invitations to the players’ clubs.
The club in question will have the right to withhold the player if they do not receive the invitation in time.
In addition, changes are not allowed unless the organizing committee certifies a force majeure event. A player on the definitive list can only be replaced if he has been seriously injured at least 24 hours before the start of his team’s first match.
The player’s replacement must then be approved in writing by the CAF Medical Committee, following receipt and acceptance of a detailed medical certificate.
This committee then draws up a certificate confirming the seriousness of the injury and the player’s inability to participate in the CAN, and submits it to the Organizing Committee for approval.
Once the certificate has been approved, the association must immediately appoint a replacement and inform the CAF’s General Secretariat.
AFCON 2023 is scheduled to take place between January 13 and February 11, with Morocco competing in Group F alongside Tanzania, DR Congo and Zambia.
