Rabat – Germany has reiterated its position regarding the Western Sahara issue during the recent 50th session of intergovernmental negotiations between Morocco and Germany.
During the session, which took place in Rabat on December 7 and 8, the German government described the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007 as a “serious and credible effort” to resolve the Sahara issue.
In addition, Germany highlighted the Moroccan initiative as a solid foundation to reach a mutually acceptable solution for the regional dispute.
The European country previously affirmed this position in the Joint Declaration of August 25, 2022, which was a result of a meeting between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita and Germany’s Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs Annalena Baerbock.
The Joint Declaration emphasized Germany’s recognition of the United Nations (UN) as the exclusive entity involved in the political process.
Germany further voiced its support for the UN Security Council Resolution 2703, acknowledging the roles and responsibilities of the involved parties in seeking a realistic, pragmatic, sustainable, and compromise-based political solution.
In addition, the joint statement reiterated the two countries’ support for the UN peacekeeping mission in the Sahara MINURSO and praised the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy Staffan de Mistura.
During the meeting between Bourita and Baerbock, the German side also congratulated Morocco on the reforms carried out under King Mohammed VI’s leadership, saying that they led to a “more open and dynamic society and economy.”
Germany particularly highlighted Morocco’s New Development Model, as well as the country’s regional efforts to strengthen the unity of the Maghreb region.
