Rabat – Moroccan midfielder Abdelhamid Sabiri will have to stay away from the pitch for at least two weeks to recover from a successful surgery to his knee cartilage.
The player’s club Al-Fayha published the news in a medical report on X, explaining that the two week period is for rest and recovery.
The midfielder should therefore be back just in time to join Morocco’s squad in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which is set to take place in Cote d’Ivoire in January.
Sabiri is one of the key players of Morocco, having played a key role in the team’s historic 2022 Qatar World Cup campaign.
The player’s services will be needed for Morocco to deliver on the high expectations during the continental competition, as the squad has already been hit with a few injuries, including Azzedine Ounahi and potentially star goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.
Sabiri has played for several European clubs before joining the Saudi League, including Huddersfield Town, Sampdoria, and Fiorentina.
Following their excellent performance at the World Cup, Moroccan fans are expecting the team to make it far into the AFCON, and to potentially compete for the title.
