Rabat – Reportedly suffering from muscle pain, Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou went off injured on Monday during his club Al Hilal’s game against Iran’s Nassaji Mazandaran.
A minute into the second half of the AFC Champions League game, the Atlas Lion requested to be substituted despite having been off to a strong start on the last day of the group stage.
The club then made an announcement on its official X account that the goalkeeper was suffering from muscular pains.
Al Hilal has not yet disclosed the duration of the unavailability, but further details will be revealed following medical evaluations.
Moroccan head coach Walid Regragui may lose one of his top players for the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which is set to take place in Cote d’Ivoire in 2024.
At the moment, there are a few more injured players among the Atlas Lions, and their AFCON status remains unsure.
Sofiane Diop, Oussama El Azzouzi, and now Yassine Bounou, could, in the worst-case scenario, miss out on the tournament, which kicks off on January 13.
