Rabat – Malawi’s government renewed support for Morocco’s territorial integrity on Monday.

Foreign Affairs Minister Nancy Tembo reiterated her country’s support in a joint briefing following a meeting with her Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita in Rabat.

The official said that her country supports the territorial integrity of Morocco and endorses the UN-led political process as the exclusive framework for reaching a realistic, practical, and sustainable political solution to the dispute over Western Sahara.

Malawi is among the countries that have long viewed Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the “only credible and realistic” solution to the dispute, she emphasized.

Tembo is on a visit to Morocco from December 17-21, a trip during which she is scheduled to preside over the inauguration of Malawi’s embassy in Rabat as well as the operationalization of its consulate general in Laayoune.

The chief of Malawian diplomacy is also set to visit Morocco’s southern provinces to observe the remarkable economic and social developments the region has witnessed over the past decade.

The visit reflects Malawi’s determination to continue boosting bilateral ties with Morocco in a wide range of fields.

Malawi opened its consulate general in Morocco’s Laayoune in July 2021, joining a growing base of African countries that support the country’s territorial integrity and have embraced the Moroccan autonomy proposal as the best route to a lasting and realistic settlement of the Sahara dispute.

Notably, the southeastern African country’s decision to support Morocco’s Autonomy Plan came after it moved to withdraw its recognition of Polisario’s self-proclaimed SADR in 2017.

In addition to its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, Malawi is also keen to bolster bilateral cooperation in other areas, including agriculture, trade, and academia.
