Rabat – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has once again sounded the alarm on the dire humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, lamenting that four out of “five of the hungriest people anywhere in the world are in Gaza.”
In a post on LinkedIn, the UN chief attached a link to a World Food Programme (WFP) report warning that the Gaza Strip will descend into famine should Israel’s aggression continue.
The report paints a grim picture, revealing that the entire population of Gaza, approximately 2.2 million people, is facing severe levels of acute food insecurity, with a staggering 26 percent, totaling 576,600 individuals on the brink of catastrophic hunger and starvation.
It further paints a looming risk of famine within the next six months, with WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain saying that WFP has long “warned of this coming catastrophe for weeks.
Tragically, without the safe, consistent access we have been calling for, the situation is desperate, and no one in Gaza is safe from starvation.” Activists have been decrying Israeli occupation forces’ weaponizing of humanitarian aid in recent weeks.
Reports from inside the Gaza Strip indicate that Israel is actively blocking the flow of humanitarian aid through the Rafah border point which it currently controls.
Previous assessments by WFP had already shed light on the dwindling resources in Gaza, with collapsed livelihoods, destroyed bakeries, empty shops, and families struggling to procure food.
Adults are sacrificing their meals to ensure children can eat, with many going days without food, the report says.
“These are not just numbers – there are individual children, women, and men behind these alarming statistics. The complexity, magnitude, and speed at which this crisis has unfolded is unprecedented,” said WFP’s Chief Economist Arif Husain.
