Rabat – The Muslim Legal Fund of America (MLFA) have filed a complaint against Harvard University following their lack of support for pro-Palestine students and those of Palestinian, Arab and Muslim descent, who have been repeated targets of harassment since October 7.
MLFA claims that Harvard has not provided adequate support to those students who are in desperate need of it, and instead they remain ‘with closed doors’ and have made occasional threats to ‘limit or retract the students’ future academic opportunities.’
The news comes in wake of the rapidly deteriorating situation within the Gaza Strip, where Israeli troops have now taken the lives of more than 26,000 Palestinians and have left more than 65,000 injured.
One student at Harvard said: ‘On top of worrying about my family’s safety in Palestine, I’m living in fear of being attacked while walking to class. No student should have to live like this.’
Since the start of the devastating war, Harvard has faced accusations for the racist misconduct of both staff and students towards those advocating for Palestinian rights.
Most notably John Abughattas, a Palestinian PhD candidate at Harvard, was intimidated by Eve Gerber – wife of Harvard professor, Jason Furman.
Eve Gerber was also caught verbally harassing another student who was wearing a keffiyeh – a scarf which symbolises support for Palestine.
This is just one example and unfortunately Harvard is merely just one of many academic institutions in the US, where students are fraught with such fear daily.
The situation in the US remains fragile, as Islamophobic acts have risen sharply in the months following the start of the Israel-Palestine war.
