Rabat – The Moroccan national football team has officially sealed qualification for the round of 16 of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) being held in Cote d’Ivoire.
The qualification came as both Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana concluded their positions in the standings with 3 and 2 points, respectively.
This means that Morocco, with four points under its belt, is qualified even if it finishes third in its group regardless of the match result of the Atlas Lions game against Zambia on Wednesday.
This offers Morocco the advantage to qualify even if it occupies third place in the Group F standings.
Morocco debuted this AFCON edition with a stunning 3-0 victory over Tanzania, but was held back by DR Congo in its second game with a 1-1 draw. Morocco remains on the top of Group F’s list with four points.
In 2017, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) made some changes to the rules of the AFCON at an Executive Committee meeting in Rabat.
The changes concerned the switch from 16 to 24 participating nations, which was implemented in the 2019 AFCON edition.
In addition, the first and second-placed teams in each of the competition‘s six groups qualify for the round of 16. Along with these come the four best third-placed teams.
