Rabat – Ons Jabeur suffered a loss of 6-0 6-2 to Mirra Andreeva in the second round of the Australian Open.
Born and raised in Tunisia, the 29-year-old first began playing the sport at the age of three and has since then rose to prominence as the highest-ranked African and Arab tennis player in Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings.
Among her most notable achievements, at the 2021 Birmingham Classic, Jabeur became the first Arab woman to win a WTA Tour title, and in 2022 she won the Madrid Open, perhaps her biggest achievement to date.
In addition to this, Jabeur is also recognized for her selfless character off the court. In November 2023, she donated some of her prize money from the WTA to Palestinians amid the war on civilians in Gaza, describing ‘It’s very tough seeing children, babies dying every day.’
Her accomplishments in the world of tennis have fostered awareness of the sport across the African region and beyond.
However, in Australia, Jabeur was met with defeat by 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva from Russia.
Andreeva has gained recognition in the past year, having reached the third round at the French Open and the fourth round at Wimbledon last year.
A young athlete, she is also praised for her ability to balance her professional tennis career with her academic studies, striving to continue to be like any normal teenager.
This rising young star has commented that her lifelong goal was to have a practice session with her idol, Ons Jabeur. Instead, the two faced it off in the second round of the Australian Open.
Andreeva will now advance to the third round of the tournament where she will be up against Dianne Parry from France.
