Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Public Works and Water has urged all road and freeway users to “exercise caution and vigilance,” ahead of strong gusts of wind, snowfall, and heavy rain from Thursday evening to Friday.
“The Ministry of Public Works and Water calls on all road and freeway users to exercise caution and vigilance due to reduced or non-existent visibility in these weather conditions,” the ministry said in a statement today.
This appeal is in response to a weather alert that Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) issued, indicating that the provinces of Taourirt, Berkane, Nador, Guercif, Figuig, Jerada, Driouch, Sefrou, Boulemane, Taza, Kenitra, Ouarzazate, Midelt and Tinghir will experience strong wind gusts from Thursday to Friday.
The locally strong winds will range from 75 to 90 kilometers per hour, DGM warned.
The directorate also forecasted significant rain in the provinces of Larache, Tanger-Assilah, Ouezzane, Tetouan, Sidi Kacem, and Kenitra, as well as snowfall on peaks over 1.700 meters in the provinces of Ifrane, Boulemane, Sefrou, Guercif, Taza, and Midelt.
On the other hand, localized heavy snowfall is expected to range from 10 to 30 centimeters.
The ministry also urged road users to contact the duty center of the Directorate General of Roads and the call center of Autoroutes du Maroc, as detailed in the ministry’s press release.
The warning comes as Morocco is in the midst of a prolonged drought and rainfall delays that are causing concern for many Moroccans. The government, for its part, has recently called for immediate action to address the growing concern over water scarcity.
