Rabat – NATO’s Operation Sea Guardian (OSG) has successfully concluded its sixth focused maritime patrol (FOCOPS 23-6) of 2023, emphasizing the crucial role played by Morocco in enhancing maritime security in the Western Mediterranean and the Strait of Gibraltar.
The Royal Moroccan frigate of the SIGMA 9813 class, Sultan Moulay Ismaïl, showcased its maritime prowess as it actively participated in monitoring sea traffic, collecting data on patterns-of-life, and fostering cooperation with NATO partners Morocco and Algeria.
This collaborative effort not only solidifies Morocco’s commitment to regional security but also highlights the strategic significance of its partnership with NATO in countering maritime threats.
Commander Francisco Garcia Flores, at the helm of the Spanish frigate ESPS Santa Maria, emphasized the integral role of OSG in the fight against terrorism.
“Remaining vigilant and sharing information with Allied and Partners in international waters of the Mediterranean and off the Strait of Gibraltar is vital for maritime security,” said Flores.
In its press release, the organization noted that ships, submarines and aircraft from eight NATO countries directly supported OSG throughout 2023, with a total of 379 sailing days and 86 air sorties.
The Royal Moroccan frigate Sultan Moulay Ismail engaged in passing exercises (PASSEX) with NATO’s Operational Task Group, showcasing the seamless interoperability and coordination between Moroccan and NATO forces.

Flores noted that the activities carried out by the flagship ESPS Santa Maria within the framework of this fruitful partnership have helped to strengthen cooperation, interoperability and maritime safety in the region.
The success of the operation is highlighted by the impressive statistics, including the investigation of 5495 ships, 1224 ship interrogations, and 23 friendly visits.
OSG, as a year-round maritime security initiative, not only focuses on countering terrorism but also aims to maintain maritime situational awareness and contribute to capacity building and interoperability.
Morocco’s involvement in Operation Sea Guardian is strategically significant, as it bolsters the nation’s maritime capabilities and strengthens its cooperation with NATO.
With Morocco playing a pivotal role, OSG conducts five to six focused operations per year in specific areas of interest in the Mediterranean.
Utilizing a range of assets, including sea, air, and sub-sea resources, these operations provide a comprehensive and accurate assessment of daily activities in different parts of the Mediterranean Sea.
The success of FOCOPS 23-6 highlights the effectiveness of this strategic partnership in safeguarding Morocco’s maritime interests and promoting stability in the region.
