Rabat – The International Court of Justice (ICJ) concluded today the day one hearing into South Africa’s genocide case against Israel.
Accusing Israel of genocide, South Africa’s case aims to hold the occupation forces responsible for the devastating war on Palestinians and is calling for an immediate ceasefire against Israeli occupation forces war on Palestinians in Gaza.
Quoted by the BBC, South African lawyer Tembeka Ngcukaitobi told the ICJ that Israel’s “genocidal intent” is clear from how the country’s occupation forces conduct their attacks on Palestinians.
“The intent to destroy Gaza has been nurtured at the highest level of state,” the lawyer added.
Adila Hassim, another lawyer representing South Africa, condemned the ongoing relentless shelling targeting civilians amid inaction to tackle the situation.
“Everyday there is mounting irreparable loss of life, property dignity, and humanity for the Palestinian people,” the lawyer said.
The launch of the two-day hearing on the South African genocide case against Israel sparked optimism among pro-Palestinian protesters.
On Thursday, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry said that the Palestinian people and their leadership look forward to South Africa’s case.
For the ministry, the case is a “historic event.”
“Holding Israel, the illegal occupying power, accountable, using all legal tools, and through international justice institutions and international law enforcement, is the main focus of the legal strategy of the State of Palestine, and the core of the diplomatic and international movement,” the Palestinian news agency quoted the ministry as saying.
The ministry also expressed support for the South African position, stressing that it has confidence in the legal advocacy presented by the African country against Israel.
