The thrilling opening match between Egypt and Mozambique concluded in a draw during the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, with a final score of 2-2.
Egypt managed to level the result with a penalty kick played during extra time. However, the game highlighted Egypt’s disappointment as Mozambique exhibited defensive strength and prowess that caught the Pharaohs off guard throughout the match.
Egypt took an early lead in the game by opening the scoreline through its player Mostafa Mohamed in the second minute of the match.
The second half, however, witnessed heightened excitement as Mozambique scored two goals, one in the 55th minute and another in the 58th minute. The result shifted the momentum of the game, leaving Egypt struggling to maintain the pace.
Egypt is one of the favorites to win this year’s titles, along with 2022 champion Senegal, World Cup semi-finalist Morocco, as well as Cote d’Ivoire.
Goal.com, a popular football-focused website, characterizes the Egyptian AFCON team as “legendary,” with “the most tournament trophies,” and a “rich history in the game.”
Goal also predicts the Egyptian team to “compete strongly” in the 34th edition of the continental tournament and that the competition is“shaping up to be one of the most competitive AFCONs ever” as it hosts a list of star players.
AFCON kicked off on Saturday, with the host country Cote d’Ivoire winning the match 2-0 against Guinea Bissau.
