Rabat – International football player Noussair Mazraoui will not take part in Morocco’s first group stage game as part of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) due to his ongoing recovery time.
Morocco’s head coach Walid Regragu confirmed the news today, saying that the Atlas Lion will be absent during the game against Tanzania due to a previous injury to his left thigh. Mazraoui’s injury happened during a recent match while playing for his international team, Bayern Munich.
Regragui is also unsure whether Mazraoui will be ready by Morocco’s second game against DR Congo on January 21.
Last week, Bayern Munich’s coach Thomas Tuchel discussed Mazraoui’s injury, saying that the football player is not completely ready to participate in the AFCON.
“Noussair Mazraoui is currently recovering and has been called up to the Moroccan squad. We hope that he will gradually return to his best level, and we would recommend that he play only until the third group stage match,” said Tuchel.
Morocco’s national team will make its first appearance in this year’s AFCON tomorrow, January 17 at 6 p.m.
The Atlas Lions will play their first game at the De San Pedro Stadium.
Converging reports predict the Atlas Lions will win the game tomorrow.
Opta Analyst’s predicting website said on Monday that its supercomputer supports Morocco as a “firm favorite” during the game, with the “Atlas Lions victorious in 62.9% of its 10,000 pre-match simulations.”
“Morocco are heavy favorites for this match, with the Opta supercomputer predicting a win in favor of the Atlas Lions,” the website added.
