Rabat – Mali has booked its ticket for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarterfinals after beating Burkina Faso 2-1 in the tournament’s Round of 16 today.
Mali’s national football team secured a hard-fought 2-1 win and earned themselves a well-deserved spot in the next stage.
The match began with Mali taking an early lead after Burkina Faso’s Edmond Tapsoba scored an own goal in the third minute of the match.
The second half saw both teams engaging in a fierce battle to put the goal in the net. Mali particularly intensified their efforts, which paid off in the second half of the match.
Mali’s Lassine Sinayako managed to break through Burkina Faso’s defense, scoring a crucial second goal in the 47th minute.
Burkina Faso responded with a goal in the 57th minute of the match through Bertrand Traoré.
The team was then keen on scoring a second goal to flip the tables on Mali. Burkina Faso fought valiantly until the final whistle, attempting to stage a comeback. However, they could not get through Mali’s strong defense.
Mali has now advanced to the quarterfinals, where they will lock horns with Cote d’Ivoire in the quest for the AFCON title. The game will take place on February 2.
