Rabat – The dire situation in Gaza has left half a million Gazans facing famine, amid Israel’s ongoing brutal campaign in the region.
The situation in northern Gaza is particularly harrowing, where the delivery of food-aid has been suspended in an attempt to protect truck drivers who have repeatedly reported being subject to attacks by criminal gangs and looting by desperate people.
Commissioner-General of the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter: “The last time UNRWA was able to deliver food aid to northern Gaza was on January 23.”
With no aid having reached the north of Gaza in more than a month, the UN warns of a “looming famine” and has stated that the situation is becoming a “man-made disaster.”
Moreover, the situation has become more problematic as right-wing Israeli protesters have blocked conveys at the Karem Abu Salem entry point into southern Gaza, claiming that Palestinians should not be given aid.
These actions are backed by a recent poll of the Israeli population which revealed that 68% oppose allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza, while Hamas continues to hold Israeli hostages.
However, another poll reveals that 85% of Arab Israelis in particular were in favour of the aid.
The news comes in wake of Israel’s report to the ICJ that is due on Monday. This report is tasked with shedding light on what they have done to increase deliveries of humanitarian aid, a measure ordered by the UN’s top court last month, to prevent genocide in Gaza.
As Israel continues to wage their perilous war on Gaza on its 143rd day, half a million Gazans face famine and nearly the entire population of 2.3 million people face acute food shortages, according to figures released from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
