Fez – Morocco’s Ambassador to the United States Youssef Amrani presented on Tuesday his appointment letter to the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, as Permanent Observer of the kingdom to the OAS.

He presented the credentials during a ceremony organized at the headquarters of this hemispheric institution in Washington.

Amrani underlined the importance of collaboration between Morocco and the OAS, the main governmental forum in the Western Hemisphere for dialogue and action on issues relating to democracy, human rights, security and development.

He also welcomed the quality of the relations of friendship and cooperation between the Kingdom and the member states of this Pan-American organization, based in particular on mutual respect and shared prosperity.

The ambassador discussed bilateral relations between Morocco and the OAS, as well as the means to further develop them as well as possible areas of cooperation.

Amrani stressed Morocco’s commitment to strengthen political dialogue with the OAS and to promote a more fruitful and in-depth exchange in areas of common interest.

In a statement to MAP news agency, Almagro said he “highly appreciates the role of the Kingdom of Morocco as a permanent observer and its interest in strengthening dialogue and cooperation with the OAS, Latin America and the Caribbean.”

“The OAS appreciates the importance of building stronger ties between the Americas and African countries to address common global challenges,” added the Secretary General of this regional organization.

Founded in 1948, the OAS brings together all 35 states of the Americas and constitutes, according to its statutes, the main governmental forum of the continent for questions of political, legal and social order.

Amrani is a Moroccan diplomat and politician who now serves as Morocco’s ambassador to the US.

He has previously held positions as Morocco’s ambassador to South Africa, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico. He also held the position as the delegate-minister for foreign affairs and cooperation in the cabinet of Abdelilah Benkirane.

He also served as consul and ambassador of Morocco to multiple Spanish-speaking countries and was secretary general of the Union for the Mediterranean until February 2012.
