Rabat – Police in the city of Fez have arrested a mentally ill man for his alleged involvement in a fatal assault against a tourist.
A source confirmed the news to Morocco World News, saying that the tourist is a foreign national.
The suspect, 53, attacked the victim with a bladed weapon while he visited the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss in Fez.
The 49-year-old victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment, but MWN’s source added that there are converging local reports that the victim may not have survived the attack.
“The case dates back to Tuesday,” the source said, noting that an investigation is ongoing to shed further light on the case.
A mental health evaluation will also be carried out to confirm whether he suffers from a mental disturbance.
This comes a month after a similar case took place in the city of Errachidia.
In January, police arrested a man wielding a knife after he attempted to enter a mosque in the city.
The arrestee also showed signs of mental disturbance, with reports indicating that the suspect had created chaos in his family’s home after intentionally harming himself.
After the incident at his home, the man tried to enter a mosque with a knife. But residents in the area were able to stop him and turn him over to the police. A bystander who was among the people who intervened to arrest the suspect suffered a minor injury during the incident.
