Rabat – Tens of thousands of Moroccans rallied in the streets of the capital Rabat on Sunday morning denouncing Israel’s genocide in Gaza and calling on the government to cut diplomatic ties with Israel.
Marching the parliament street in Rabat, protests held banners that read “stop the genocide on Gaza” and “end normalization with the occupation.”
Holding the Moroccan flag side-by-side with the Palestinian flag, protesters chanted in demand of breaking the normalization deal with Israel and a halt to the “ethnic cleansing” that is taking place in Gaza.
As of Sunday, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) have murdered over 28,000 Palestinians and counting, with the bulk of casualties recorded among children and civilians.
Gaza is facing the prospect of total famine, as occupation forces and Israeli protestors on the border are restricting access to humanitarian aid.
Condemning any further affiliation with the Israelis, protestors burned an Israeli flag in front of the Moroccan parliament, calling for the government to end bilateral ties.
Morocco has not directly revoked its 2020 normalization deal with Israel. However, King Mohammed VI has repeatedly denounced Israel’s aggression against the Palestinian people and called for a return to the negotiation table to work towards the two-state solution.
However, the recent protests all over Morocco show public dissatisfaction, as Moroccans call on the government to take a more proactive stance against Israel.
As the humanitarian situation spirals, the IOF continues to push in their aggression, announcing plans to launch an assault against Rafah, in southern Gaza.
The border town is currently crowded with Palestinians who left their homes to flee IOF’s relentless airstrikes.
Meanwhile, Israel continues to ignore international calls to halt the violence even following the UN International Court of Justice’s order for a ceasefire to prevent genocide.
Saudi Arabia, which has suspended their normalization talks with Israel, warned of “very serious repercussions” if Israel moves forward with its planned assault.
Even Israel’s long-standing allies in the West, particularly the US, are now speaking against Israel’s aggression. US President Joe Biden has labeled Israel’s plan to launch an assault in Rafah as being “over the top.”
While the US has been funding and arming Israel’s aggression on Gaza since October 7, Gaza, but the country is now taking a shift in tone. This shift advocating for “humanitarian pauses” comes following mounting global pressure over the crisis as well the possibility of an all-out war in the region as US bases are constantly under the threat of retaliatory attacks.
Earlier this week at a press briefing, the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned Israel against what he described as the “dehumanization” of Palestinians, stressing that the October 7 attack is not a “license to dehumanize others.”
Blinken further expressed his concerns to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the civilian death toll in Gaza is “too high.”
However, despite the rhetoric, the US continues to provide military and economic assistance to Israel and reaffirms its commitment to Israel’s security.
Although the recent bill for $17.6 billion in new military assistance recently failed to pass in the House of Representatives, the government has already provided Israel with an upward of $14.3 billion.
