Rabat – Police in Casablanca are investigating the alleged involvement of a primary school principal in the sexual harassment of an 11-year-old sixth-grade student on Tuesday.

Police interrogated the school principal who works at the Abou Kacim Echabbi primary school in Ben M’sik in Casablanca.

Abdellatif Chaouki, a regional director at the Ministry of Education in the Ben M’sik  area said that police summoned the principal on Tuesday afternoon

An investigation has been opened after the family of the 11-year-old girl filed a complaint against the school principal. Police also listened to statements from other female students.

“The regional directorate suspended the school principal temporarily pending the end of the investigation,” Chaouki told SNRTNews, noting that a new director has been instructed to lead the school amid the ongoing probe.

Investigation is still ongoing to determine the circumstances of the case. A regional committee has been assigned to address the situation.

According to Article 485 of the penal code, a person who is involved in a violent assault against a minor under the age of 18 faces a sentence of 10 to 20 years in prison.

According to data from Morocco’s public prosecutor, the North African country registered a total of 3,295 cases of sexual assault against children in 2022.

The number represents over 40% of all crimes of violence against children.
