Rabat – Morocco has called for an urgent ceasefire in the ongoing Israeli military campaign against Gaza.
The call was made during a session in Geneva on Tuesday, spearheaded by Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Nasser Bourita.
While addressing the high-level segment of the 55th session of the Human Rights Council, chaired by Morocco, Bourita highlighted the dire situation in Gaza, describing it as an unprecedented crisis and a humanitarian catastrophe.
He emphasized that the international community cannot turn a blind eye to the suffering of the people of Gaza, stressing that urgent action is required to halt the bloodshed.
“In the face of escalating military actions and worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza, Morocco reaffirms its unwavering stance and calls once again, with great urgency, for an immediate, comprehensive, and sustainable ceasefire in the Israeli war against Gaza,” stated Bourita.
The Minister further stressed the importance of safeguarding civilians and preventing the targeting of civilian infrastructure, lamenting the indiscriminate Israeli airstrikes on hospitals, schools, places of worship, and other civilian facilities.
In addition, Bourita emphasized the urgent need to facilitate the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged population of Gaza.
He also highlighted the importance of protecting Palestinians from forced displacement and advocated for the establishment of a political framework to address the Palestinian question, advocating for a revival of the two-state solution with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.
Morocco is represented in the Human Rights Council in Geneva through its Permanent Representative, Omar Zniber.
Zniber, elected for the task in January, echoed Morocco’s call for immediate action to end the violence and alleviate the suffering of the people of Gaza.
Since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2023, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) have killed nearly 30,000 Palestinians, and forcibly displaced over 70% of the Gaza population.
