Rabat – A new survey by Moroccan market research firm Sunergia said that 82% of Moroccans feel safe in public spaces.

The indicator reflects an increase of 17 overall points compared to 2019. The survey revealed that men (84%) feel safer in public places than women (79%).

Respondents’ age groups are also mentioned in the report, with 87% of young people aged 18-24 emphasizing that they feel safe in public spaces in Morocco.

Followed by young people are citizens aged between 55 and 64, with 83%.

People aged over 65 and youth aged between 25 and 34 said they feel more insecure in public.

When asked about factors that make some Moroccans feel insecure, respondents cited unemployment as a major driver.

The unemployment rate in Morocco surged to 13.5% last year.

According to data from the High Commission of Planning (HCP) from November of 2023, unemployment rates are staggeringly high among young people aged 15 and 24 at 38%, as well as women and college graduates, each at 19.8% respectively.

Unemployment is followed by drugs as one of the major concerns among Moroccans who feel unsafe in public spaces (34%),  as well as lack of education (29%), thieves (8%), and poverty (4%).

About 20% of respondents did not respond to the question.

The survey also listed cities chosen by respondents as the ideal choice for the best quality of life.

According to the report, Tangier tops the list of cities in Morocco cited as the best choice for the best quality of life in 2023.

Respondents also selected Tangier in 2019.

Some Moroccans or 13% of respondents believe that “no city guarantees a good quality of life.”

Meanwhile, Casablanca ranks third,” showing significant progress by being mentioned by 13% of Moroccans compared to only 4% in 2019,” the report noted.

“Marrakech and Rabat are also part of the top 5 cities where it is good to live, with 11% and 10% of the surveys, respectively,” according to Sunergia.

Sale, Rabat’s twin city, and Mohammedia near Casablanca are listed at the bottom of the list, according to the report.
