Rabat – Moroccan security forces, working in cooperation with customs officials at the Tangier-Med port, thwarted a significant drug trafficking attempt earlier today.

A source within Moroccan security services confirmed the seizure of 1.2 tons of hashish, a form of cannabis resin, meticulously concealed within a freight truck.

The hashish was discovered during routine port control procedures. Authorities found the drugs hidden in specially built compartments within the metal chassis of the internationally registered truck.

A 28-year-old Moroccan citizen, the truck’s driver, was arrested in connection with the seizure.

According to the security source, the suspect is currently under investigation by judicial authorities under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office.

The investigation aims to identify all individuals involved in the trafficking operation and uncover any potential national and international connections to this criminal activity.

This seizure highlights the ongoing efforts by Moroccan security forces to combat international drug trafficking. The operation coincides with Morocco’s recent call for a renewed international effort to address the global drug trade.

During the High-Level Debate of the 67th Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs held in Vienna on Friday, Morocco’s representative emphasized the need for a collective approach.

“We must strengthen cooperation on drug prevention and control, particularly with African countries,” Morocco’s representative Mohamed Farhane stressed.

Farhane advocated for a multifaceted approach that tackles drug trafficking not only from a law enforcement perspective but also as a social and technical issue.

He called for increased technical cooperation and capacity building, particularly for developing nations within Africa, to address the root causes of drug trafficking and addiction.
