Rabat – The President of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), Jallal Toufiq, took the helm at the presentation ceremony of the 2023 annual report on Tuesday, held at the United Nations Office in Vienna.
This highly anticipated report offers a comprehensive overview of the prevailing global drug situation, shedding light on evolving trends and challenges faced in combating drug trafficking worldwide.
While the report notes a decrease in cannabis drug busts in Morocco compared to the previous year, it also emphasizes the continued significance of the North African region as a transit hub for cannabis destined for Europe.
Notably, Morocco has intensified its efforts to combat drug trafficking, with authorities making various seizures at airports and ports.
The Moroccan security forces’ annual report for 2023 underscores the importance of collaboration between national police and Territorial Surveillance services (DGST) to address drug trafficking.
This coordinated effort led to the handling of 99,513 cases and the apprehension of 130,212 individuals, including 305 foreigners involved in drug-related crimes.
In terms of seizures, authorities confiscated 81 tons and 175 kilograms of cannabis, representing a 17% decrease from the previous year. Additionally, significant amounts of cocaine, heroin, and psychotropic substances were intercepted.
The UN World Drug Report goes beyond the North African cannabis trade, offering a broader perspective on global drug challenges.
It highlights the increasing complexity of drug trafficking and explores the intersection of illicit drug economies with environmental crimes and insecurity in regions like the Amazon basin in South America.
Additionally, the report delves into critical topics like drug use in humanitarian contexts, conflict zones, and the evolving synthetic drug market.
The report also explores emerging trends in drug policy, including ongoing research on the potential medical applications of psychedelics and cannabis, as well as advancements in addiction treatment services.
While the INCB report acknowledges the challenges faced in combating drug trafficking, it also underscores the ongoing efforts and progress made by countries like Morocco in tackling this complex issue.
