Amnesty International Condemns Global Response to Gaza Aid Crisis as ‘Impotent and Weak’

Rabat – Amnesty International’s Secretary-General, Agnès Callamard, has condemned the international community’s efforts to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as “a sign of impotence and weakness,” highlighting the dire situation faced by the 2.4 million Palestinians living in the region.

Amidst the ongoing aggression by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF), Gaza is grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis, with limited access to essential aid for its population.

Despite the urgency of the situation, delivering aid has proved challenging due to substantial difficulties in land transportation.

Consequently, several nations, including the United States, have resorted to air drops and maritime routes from Cyprus to provide assistance.

However, both the United Nations and numerous non-governmental organizations stress that these methods cannot adequately replace land routes, exacerbating the already dire circumstances.

Speaking at a press conference in Madrid this Wednesday, Amnesty International’s Secretary-General, Agnès Callamard, criticized these efforts as indicative of international ineffectiveness.

She emphasized the urgent need for accountability regarding aid delivery through established land crossings between Israel and Gaza.

Callamard highlighted the failure to leverage effective measures, expressing concern over the continued arms transfers to Israel amidst the crisis.

The recent announcement by US President Joe Biden to establish a temporary port in Gaza to facilitate aid deliveries was met with skepticism by Callamard, who voiced apprehension over the prolonged timeline for its implementation.

With the war claiming over 30,000 lives since its onset in October, according to figures from the Palestinian Health Ministry, Callamard emphasized the pressing need for immediate action.

Questioning the rationale behind investing in a project that could take up to 60 days to materialize, Callamard stressed the urgency of the situation and urged for more substantial efforts to enforce international obligations.

She emphasized the responsibility to prevent genocide and called for exploring alternative means to address the crisis effectively.
