Rabat – Kuwait has officially confirmed that March 11th will mark the beginning of the fasting month of Ramadan for the year 2024.

The country’s moon sighting authority announced the news today, according to Kuwait’s news agency Kuna.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community.

Kuwait is predominantly an Islamic country, with approximately 85% of its population identifying as Muslim. The remaining population primarily is made up of individuals who are non-Kuwaiti but living in the country.

Kuwaiti iftar (the fast-breaking meal) tables during Ramadan feature traditional cuisine, even as Kuwaitis incorporate a variety of foods from other cultures, reflecting the globalization of menus in our digitally interconnected world.

The iftar table is graced by a variety of dishes, with Al Harees being a notable favorite. This dish is prepared by boiling wheat in lightly salted water for several hours, meat -lamb or chicken-, is added and simmered for an extended period, usually at least four hours. Finally, the dish is served with a spoonful of local ghee on top.

This dish enjoys popularity not only in Kuwait but also across the Gulf region, including the UAE and Qatar.

Another staple during Ramadan in Kuwait is At-Tashreeb, a yeast bread typically served in small portions. This bread is often accompanied by a savory gravy infused with potatoes, gourd, and dried lemons.

Additionally, Al Jareesh is a prevalent Ramadan dish in Kuwait and the wider Gulf region. This dish features crushed wheat adorned with onions, offering a hearty and traditional flavor profile for iftar meals.

As Kuwait and Muslims worldwide prepare to embark on this holiest of months, the announcement serves as a reminder of the unity and shared faith that transcends geographical boundaries and cultural differences during Ramadan.
