Rabat – Morocco has solidified its position as a frontrunner in intellectual property within Africa and the Arab world, according to the latest International IP Index for 2024, published by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Ranking 22nd out of 55 assessed countries, the Kingdom earned a notable score of 62.76 points, showcasing its continued dedication to fostering innovation and creativity.

The index evaluates how well a country protects the intellectual property of inventors and innovators, how many new IP products are registered nationally, among a host of other factors.

This achievement highlights Morocco’s commitment to bolstering its regulatory and legislative framework, aligning itself with international standards by ratifying key treaties such as the Singapore Treaty and the Geneva Act in 2022.

The country’s efforts extend beyond legislation, with initiatives such as the establishment of an innovative project bank and an “IP Marketplace,” aimed at companies, start-ups, universities and research centers, to help them commercialize their inventions, as well as the implementation of programs to speed up the processing of patent applications.

Despite these advancements, the report highlights several challenges in Morocco’s intellectual property landscape, particularly concerning enforcement. Issues such as high rates of physical counterfeiting and online piracy pose significant hurdles.

Furthermore, uncertainties persist regarding the availability of patents for creations involving intellectual activities (CIIs).

On a global scale, leading the index are countries with impressive scores surpassing 90%, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Sweden. These nations serve as benchmarks for intellectual property standards and innovation ecosystems.

The International IP Index, now in its 12th edition, evaluates the intellectual property systems of the world’s largest economies across 50 distinct criteria.

It not only offers valuable insights into the status of intellectual property protection but also provides actionable recommendations for countries aspiring to strengthen their innovation landscapes.
